Volunteer Opportunities and Descriptions
Tutoring - In this role, volunteer tutors help a child become a successful reader. The volunteer tutor works on helping the student learn his/her sounds and strategies for figuring out new words they encounter when reading. Training available. Commitment involves 1 or more hours per week, during or after school.
After School Homework Helper - In this role, homework helpers aid children with basic help completing their homework in language arts and math. Commitment involves 1 or more hours per week.
Mentoring - In the role of mentor, the volunteer becomes a role model for a child by serving as a supportive adult in his or her life. It is an opportunity to share with a student your life history, occupational background, and life's lessons that have contributed to your success. Students need connections with people who have lived successful lives. Commitment involves 1 or more hours per week.
Writing Coach - Volunteer coaches provide approximately an hour or two a week helping middle school students become confident writers and critical thinkers.
Financial Literacy Program - Help students learn basics of banking, budgeting, checking & savings accounts. Commitment: a total of 4 hours of teaching - dates & times are flexible; training required.
Library Assistant - The library volunteer assists in restoring a closed school library to full operations. Several of our schools do not have a functioning library. They have books and the space, but they need volunteers to catalogue books, and to serve as part-time librarians. Commitment involves 2 or more hrs per week.
Teacher Appreciation - The teacher appreciation volunteer does not work directly with students, but instead works to support teacher morale. Through periodic luncheons, gift bags, and special snacks, volunteers help to put a little wind in the sails of our teachers. The time commitment for this volunteer position is flexible and by arrangement.
Classroom Helper - In this role, the volunteer provides support to the teacher in the classroom by completing general tasks, including working with students at times. Commitment involves 1 or more hrs per week.
Playground Monitor - The playground monitor works on the play ground before school and/or during lunch recess. In addition to helping to ensure campus safety, the volunteer builds relationships with kids and encourages respect for self and others. Commitment involves 1 to 2 hours per week.
Campus Beautification - The volunteer in this role works with students on school gardens and art projects. Time commitment is flexible.
Food Bagging - Volunteers are needed Wednesdays during the school year to prepare food bags. These bags for low-income children are assembled at the Alameda County Food Bank located just off HWY 880 near the Oakland Stadium at: 7900 Edgewater Drive, Oakland. Commitment involves 2 days per month, Wednesdays between 10am - noon)
Summer Camp -the volunteer in this role works with students beyond the school year. There are opportunities to serve as a camp counselor, help with transportation to and from camp, and/or coordinate camp activities. Time commitment is flexible, depending on specific role.
