Randy Roth,
Founder and President
Having served for 13 years as Senior Pastor of First Covenant Church in Oakland, Mr. Roth felt called to leave the pastorate to serve disadvantaged urban children and youth. In July 2001 he launched Faith Network of the East Bay, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation to improve the whole health of children and families of the East Bay.
Graduating with a BA from Westmont College (1966), Mr. Roth went on to receive a Master of Divinity (1970) and Doctor of Ministry (1976) from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Certificate of Completion from the Mentoring Training of Trainer’s Institute, University California, Berkeley (2002).
Mr. Roth’s community involvements include: Co-Chair, Career Technology Education Advisory Committee (Oakland Unified School District), Oakland Metro/Alameda County Advisory Board, Salvation Army (2006 – Present); Incentive Awards Program Scholarship Interview Team, UC Berkeley (2006 – Present), University of Holy Names Community Advisory Board (2003 – 2004); Oakland Reader with HEROES, Volunteer Center of Alameda County (1999 – 2001); Co-chair, Embrace Oakland, citywide health faire, Mosswood Park, 2001. |

Chelsea Boniak
Director of Development
Chelsea Boniak graduated from UCLA, with a B.A. in Sociology. Before joining the staff of Faith Network, she served as an Intern for Breakthrough Parenting, Inc. in Los Angeles. She also assisted as administrative support for UC Berkeley's Incentive Awards Scholarship Program and was a Cruise Director for Commodore Events in Alameda. Chelsea spends her free time discovering new restaurants with her husband Chris, running Lake Merritt, and serving as a board member at her church. |

Rebecca Buckley
Associate Director and Succeeding by Reading Program Director
Recently completing her Masters of Divinity from Fuller Seminary, Rebecca previously taught ESL with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, Halimotok, Philippines; American Language Academy, Berkeley; Pacific English Language Institute, San Luis Obispo; Cal Poly Extended Education; Cuesta Community College; American Language Program, CSU Hayward; Intensive English Program, St. Mary's College. Most recently she served as Interim Director of Mission Outreach, First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley. Rebecca loves spending time with her two daughters, Melissa and Christina. |

Norman Brooks
Director of Science Horizons
Norman Brooks has an extensive background in education including, Site Support Teacher for LITES (Leadership Institute for Teaching Elementary Science –Mills College); Site Support Teacher for SKILL (Science Knowledge through Inquiry and Language Literacy-UC Berkeley-Lawrence Hall of Science); Adjunct Instructor, Holy Names and San Francisco Universities (Teaches Science Curriculum and Methods courses for the teacher credentialing program). Norman has also served for many years as Mentor for SIMBA (African American men working with African American boys). Most recently Norman was a case manager for the Oakland Unified School District. Norman enjoys training and showing his champion poodle, Quasar.

Charlotte Martinez
Director of Health4Kids
Charlotte Martinez retired in 2006 from Chicago Title Company where she had served as their Vice President and Branch Manager of the Montclair branch for many years, and then in Operations Management in the final years of her service there. Following her desire to work in the non-profit sector, she has spent the last year volunteering in various places, working as a writer coach at Longfellow Middle School in Berkeley; continuing as a Selection Committee Member for the Incentive Awards Scholarship Program at U.C. Berkeley; serving as Volunteer Coordinator and as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley; and with Faith Network in their outreach to urban public schools. Her favorite role, however, is mother to three daughters and sons-in-law, and grandmother to her many grandchildren. |

Varetta Mayes
Director of Volunteers
Varetta Mayes received her M.B.A. at St. Mary ’s College in Moraga, CA and B. A. at Warner Pacific College in Portland, OR. She spent over thirteen years in the financial mortgage field. As Vice President of Operations, she led teams to successful operations processes, designed change-management strategies, developed policies and procedures, prepared cost analysis reports, and managed and trained offshore vendors in India. She also has worked as a management consultant for firms such as Bearing Point and Fidelity. She has volunteered for a number of non-profit organizations and at her church. She enjoys travel, reading, and has completed two marathons and three half marathons. |

Carolyn Piraino
Literacy Specialist
Carolyn Piraino is a certified Educational Therapist and brings to Faith Network her experience as tutor and literacy trainer. She is also pursuing a Masters of Education at Holy Names University. Carolyn is a clinician at the Raskob Institute of Learning, working with learning-disabled children from first through eighth grade. Before pursuing a career in special education, Carolyn served for 12 years on the Board of Directors for the Children's Food Basket (CFB), overseeing and managing CFB operations for seven of those years. In her free time, Carolyn enjoys reading, serving her church community, quilting, gardening and spending more time with friends now that she is an empty-nester. |

Madalyn Wong
Office Administrator
Upon graduating from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, Madalyn Wong went on to finish an MA in literature at SFSU. Shakespeare’s contemporaries have intrigued her throughout her literary journey. Before joining Faith Network, she served as office manager for Spiritual Counterfeits Project. She has also consistently tutored and taught for the last seven years. Currently, Madalyn goes to Regeneration Church in Oakland where she assists in coordinating events, tutors privately, and teaches Sunday school. Madalyn enjoys cooking stews, reading, and living creatively in small spaces. |
